The next When Harry Met Sally
I went to see Proof last night with Julie, Heidi, and half a boatload of mathematicians, one of whom also graduated from the UC (but before our time). Other UC people have talked about it, but I'd like to say that the best part for me was the fun of being part of the obnoxious group gasping "They're right by the Classics Coffeshop!" and groaning/laughing at the "mathematicians are weird, but get laid more than you'd think" speech, which nobody else in the theater found notable.
They stretch the campus geography around a little bit - for instance, the math lectures taking place in the classics building, and I think that they leave classics to appear right outside Harper - but as others have noted, they get the important things right. I will admit to being embarassingly excited to see what had to be the Eckhart stairs (although now I'm doubting myself...somebody back me up on this!) Also - in the last scene of the movie, Paltrow is sitting in the quad right outside Harper - there's that little stone square patio in the middle, and she's sitting on one of the four low, square bench things. But did anybody ever actually sit on those things?
So get together a few alums and some mathematicians, and annoy the other theater patrons by laughing at "Northwestern? You want to live in Evanston?" or the mere mention of the number 1729.
